Valley residents benefit from outreach activities
Whether it’s a bright morning with students from valley schools at the Las Vegas Wash or a booth at an outreach event, Las Vegas Wash Project Coordination Team members are there to share information on the Las Vegas Wash. During the months of March and April 2009, Project Team members reached more than 3,000 valley residents through various educational and public outreach activities including tours, booths at events and planting events.

Along with spring comes the opportunity to re-evaluate planting strategies for our greenhouse partnership with Mabel Hoggard Math and Science Magnet School. More than 15 students from the 4th grade Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program traveled to the University of Nevada, Reno’s Cooperative Extension orchard in North Las Vegas to fill containers with soil. Armed with shovels, gloves and goodwill, the students worked to fill the containers in minimal time. Once filled and loaded into a truck, students traveled to the Wash to collect cuttings under the supervision of Project Team staff and GATE instructors. Students will cultivate their plants in the greenhouse which will yield plants for the upcoming Fall Green-Up planting event on approximately 30 acres of the Clark County Water Reclamation District facility.
Project Team members were also in attendance at the very first "Wings and Wildlife Festival," held in Laughlin, Nev. on March 13 and 14, 2009. Biologist Debbie Van Dooremolen presented at the festival and staffed a booth for more than 100 participants from all over the country. Presentations were also given to freshmen at Sierra Vista High School and Cimarron-Memorial High School encouraging local students to consider professional careers in the world of science. More than 2,500 elementary schools attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Earth Day event where they also learned about career opportunities in the scientific field and how they can help protect Mother Earth.
Focusing on adult residents of the valley, Project Team members also hosted booths at the "Party for the Planet" at Mandalay Bay, the Spring’s Preserve plant sale, Clark County’s “Earth Day Rendezvous” and “What on Earth Day” at the Springs Preserve. At these events, valley residents were given the opportunity to recycle plastic bags, batteries and paper and learn how to save energy and reduce pollution.
As often as possible, the Project Team is sharing information about the Wash around the valley. Stay tuned, we will be at a location near you! For more information on events, continue to visit our website.
