Celebrating 10 Years of Protecting and Enhancing the Las Vegas Wash
The Las Vegas Wash Coordination Committee (LVWCC) kicked off its 10-Year Anniversary Celebration with a tour on Nov. 17, 2008. The tour at the Nature Preserve began at the Upper Division Weir and the commemorative event site with an overview of the project. Construction Project Head Gerry Hester provided commentary on the weir and its completion.

At the event luncheon, the Southern Nevada Water Authority's (SNWA) General Manager Pat Mulroy emphasized the importance of stabilizing the Wash and maintaining it as a natural resource for the Las Vegas valley. Several other speakers followed, highlighting the significant progress made along the Wash over the past decade and a certificate of commendation was presented to the LVWCC by a representative from Sen. Harry Reid’s office.
Other event activities took place at various weirs throughout the Wash and included:
- the planting of the LVWCC’s commemorative garden
- a discussion on water quality with hydrologist Xiaoping Zhou
- an explanation of the importance of revegetation with Wash Team member Jason Eckberg
- an overview of wildlife monitoring efforts at the Wash with Debbie Van Dooremolen
- a visit with Engineer Ken Colgate to a Wash location where riprap from the Stardust Casino found a second life as bank protection
After 10 years of hard work by the Las Vegas Wash Coordination Committee’s members and thousands of volunteers, the Wash is becoming a stable channel offering an abundant wildlife habitat and a beautiful natural setting for all Las Vegas Valley citizens and visitors to enjoy.
