Explore the Wash

Explore the Wash, an outdoor classroom

This site has introduced you to the Las Vegas Wash, but there is nothing better than actually going to the Wash and seeing what it is all about. Through the Nature Preserve at the Clark County Wetlands Park, you can explore miles of paved and unpaved trails that meander along the Wash. The Nature Preserve also provides opportunities for teachers and students to explore the Wash as an outdoor classroom. The visitor center at the Nature Preserve offers field trips for elementary classes. Resources are available for high school students as well. Contact the visitor center at 455-7522 for more information.

Trained volunteers at the Clark County Wetlands Park conduct facilitated programs for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade elementary school students from October to April. The guided 2 hour visits are conducted on Thursday mornings from 10:00am to Noon. Teachers must call in advance to reserve a visit date. They are then mailed an information packet with suggested pre and post visit activities, along with park rules and general park information.

When the group arrives they are divided into smaller groups of 12 or 15 students. Each student is given a Wetlands Park Naturalist Notebook, which they use during their visit and are allowed to keep. Students are also provided with a pair of binoculars to use during the tour. A volunteer facilitator guides the group, and along the way teaches the students about vegetation, wildlife, weather and soil at the Wetlands Park. Students also learn how wetlands function and the importance of wetlands habitat. This year over 2,000 students have visited the Wetlands for the guided field trip program.

In addition to the school field trips, numerous other guided tours are provided throughout the year to both youth and adults. For further information call 455-7522 or 455-7560.
