What can I do to help? Pollution prevention
No Illegal Dumping

Boy by dumpster Everything we dump into the gutter makes its way to Lake Mead through Las Vegas Wash. Dumping trash out in the desert or dumping harmful materials in the street contributes to pollution in the valley and can negatively affect the quality of the water in Lake Mead. These activities are not only harmful to the quality of our environment and our water. They are also illegal. In order to remind people that dumping into storm drains is illegal and bad for the environment, the following program was established:

Storm Drain Plaque Attack Campaign

Plaque Attack Campaign Logo

Storm Drain The Storm Drain Plaque Attack Campaign (SPAC) is a community based stormwater quality education program. The Campaign addresses stormwater pollution, where it often starts - in our neighborhood stormwater collection system. One of the most common causes of urban stormwater pollution is the disposal of materials such as household hazardous chemicals, yard and pet waste, and used motor oil, in or near our drop inlets, which are the entrance to storm drain pipelines. By teaching our community about stormwater pollution, and by labeling the drop inlets with a plaque providing a message of the eventual destination - Lake Mead, we can help prevent stormwater pollution.

Campaign sponsors include the Conservation District of Southern Nevada (CDSN), the Cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and Mesquite, Clark County, Southern Nevada Water Authority, Nevada Rural Water Association and the Pollution Prevention Team. Through a grant awarded the CDSN the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and contributions from local partners, the SPAC sponsors propose to develop educational and promotional materials including refrigerator magnets, T-shirts, water bottles, brochures, signs and coloring books. Volunteers will adhere plaques near drop inlets as a reminder of stormwater pollution. "KIP" the fish, the campaign mascot will also appear on the plaque.
