Water Conservation
With
just four inches of rainfall in the Las Vegas Valley a year, water
is a limited and precious resource. Thus, Southern Nevada has
adopted a responsible water conservation/efficiency strategy to
ensure the region has enough water to meet its needs. Because
residential customers use 65 percent of the valley's water supply,
Southern Nevada's conservation success centers around the individual
homeowner's efforts to reduce water waste. The Las Vegas Wash
Coordination Committee supports the conservation efforts of the
local water purveyors because the increased water use in the valley
results in increased discharge into the Wash. Responsible water
use will assist in the long-term goals of managing the issues
concerning the Wash.
How
much water does your household use?
A typical
family of five averages about 27,000 gallons a month, or about
326,000 gallons a year. Residential water use represents 65 percent
of all water usage in Southern Nevada. Nearly two-thirds of that
water is used outdoors to water landscapes, wash cars, etc.
What
You Can Do to Help
Outdoor Water Saving Tips
- Adjust your sprinkler
clocks seasonally as recommended by the
SNWA Watering Guide.
- Check
and adjust your sprinklers weekly to keep the water on your
lawn, not the street or sidewalk.
- Use
a broom, not a hose, to clean the driveway.
- Convert to
water-efficient landscaping.
Indoor
Water Saving Tips
- Check your
toilets and faucets for leaks. You could be wasting more than
100 gallons per day.
- Install
flow-restricting devices in your sink, showers and toilets to
reduce water flow.
- Turn off
the water when brushing your teeth or shaving.
- Take shorter
showers. Limit showers to five minutes or less.
- Wash only
full loads of dishes and laundry.
